SHURUGWI – Rusunguko High School in Shurugwi is poised for a significant leap into the digital age, thanks to the visionary generosity of local farmer and community stalwart, Rodwell Mbirimi. He has been widely lauded for donating a state-of-the-art internet facility, a move that stakeholders say will fundamentally transform the learning environment and bridge the persistent urban-rural digital divide.
The donation, described as a cornerstone for future-proofing education in the rural community, has been met with profound appreciation from the School Development Committee (SDC), pupils, and teaching staff.
"This isn't merely a donation; it's a monumental step forward, a testament to the transformative power of community-driven initiatives," affirmed the SDC Chairperson, Toddy Murangandi. "Mr. Mbirimi's visionary gesture is not just enhancing our school's physical infrastructure; it's fundamentally reshaping our educational landscape. It directly addresses the critical urban-rural digital disparity, granting our students immediate, unfettered access to a boundless wealth of global information, e-learning resources, and opportunities that were once unimaginable in this setting."
Murangandi also described Mbirimbi as a perennial helper at the school.
“The man previously installed a borehole and a water storage tank here and now we have sufficient water, the school uses surplus water in agricultural activities. Now he is back donating a state-of the art Wifi. We are extremely overjoyed by his gesture; he has children and community at heart. We invite other locals to follow such good deeds, “he said.
Echoing these sentiments, the SDC Vice Chairperson, Veronica Tandayi emphasized the broader impact. "We unequivocally recognize the indispensable role of robust community involvement in fostering sustainable school development. Mr. Mbirimi's contribution stands as a shining beacon, a catalyst for progress that we hope will inspire others within and beyond our community. We are immensely grateful for his unwavering support and eagerly anticipate nurturing this invaluable partnership for the continued advancement and empowerment of our learners."
The SDC Secretary, Rudia Mapingire further elaborated on the strategic importance of the donation. "Our mandate as a School Development Committee is resolutely focused on future-proofing our students, ensuring they possess the skills and resources vital for success in the 21st century. Before this, our students faced significant disadvantages compared to their urban counterparts when it came to research, online learning, and digital literacy. Mr. Mbirimi's donation is not just a significant step; it is a giant leap towards achieving this strategic goal, empowering us to meet the evolving educational needs of every student within our care and ensuring Rusunguko High School remains relevant and competitive."
For Mr. Mbirimi himself, the decision to invest in the school's digital infrastructure stems from a deep-seated conviction – a philosophy he refers to as "ploughing back." Known for his proactive stance on community upliftment, he expressed his motivations with unwavering resolve.
"For me, it's a simple philosophy: if this community, this land, has helped me prosper, it is my inherent duty, my tradition, to plough back," Mr. Mbirimi declared with conviction, his words carrying the weight of a clear development agenda. "I believe in progress, in lifting up our own, and I have no patience whatsoever for those who cling to retrogressive thinking, who stand as enemies of development. My agenda is clear: empower our youth, equip them with the digital tools they need to compete globally, and ensure Rusunguko High is at the forefront of this digital revolution. There's no room for complacency when the future of our children is at stake."
Addressing the School Development Committee, the school’s Deputy Head Don Jhamba said the installation of a state-of-the-art internet facility is set to dramatically transform teaching and learning methodologies at Rusunguko High.
“Students will now have unprecedented access to online libraries, research databases, e-learning platforms, and virtual classrooms, allowing them to engage with subject matter in dynamic new ways. Teachers, too, will benefit from enhanced professional development resources, collaborative tools, and access to a global network of educational best practices, effectively bridging the knowledge gap between rural and urban educators,” Jhamba told the SDC Committee.
This development is particularly crucial for bridging the digital divide, ensuring that the youth of Shurugwi's rural areas are not left behind in an increasingly connected world. It offers them equal opportunities to develop critical digital literacy skills, prepare for future careers in technology and other fields, and participate fully in the global information society.
In Zimbabwe, School Development Committees (SDCs) play a vital role in ensuring that schools meet the educational needs of their students, as governed by the Education Act (Chapter 25:04). Mr. Mbirimi's generous act perfectly exemplifies the collaborative spirit encouraged by this framework, showcasing how community leaders can work hand-in-hand with SDCs to drive meaningful, sustainable development. His commitment has not only improved the school’s infrastructure but has also galvanized the community, setting a powerful precedent for self-reliance and progress.
