SHURUGWI— A local man was fined US$50 for stealing a hooded jacket valued at just US$8, prompting both laughter and disbelief among community members. Simbarashe Mudhutswa, a resident of Tongogara, was convicted of theft in a case that has raised eyebrows regarding the motivations behind such a seemingly trivial crime.

The incident occurred on May 22, 2025, when the complainant, only identified as Tendai, left his shop, Magwese, unattended to fetch water. Seizing the opportunity, the accused entered the shop and took the jacket, concealing it in a nearby secluded area. However, his actions did not go unnoticed. A passerby witnessed the theft and promptly informed the complainant, who reported the incident to the authorities.

During the court proceedings, Public Prosecutor Tafadzwa Guzete presented the details of the case, which left many in the courtroom puzzled. On May 27, 2025, Shurugwi Magistrate Sithabile Zungula presided over the case and expressed disbelief at the circumstances surrounding the theft.

In her ruling, Magistrate Zungula imposed a fine of US$50 on Simbarashe, citing the absence of aggravating circumstances. “A plea of guilty is mitigatory. You pleaded guilty and did not waste the court’s time and resources. Furthermore, you are a first offender,” she explained, noting that these factors contributed to a lighter sentence than would typically be mandated for theft.

The magistrate also highlighted that the stolen jacket had been recovered and that Simbarashe had not benefited from the crime. He was ordered to pay the fine by June 10, 2025, at the Shurugwi court accounts office. Failure to comply with the order would result in a 30-day imprisonment sentence.

Despite the serious nature of the charge, the circumstances of the case have led to a mix of amusement and bewilderment within the community. When asked about his motivations for stealing the jacket, Simbarashe offered a nonchalant response, stating, “I was drunk, I guess.”

While the legal system has dealt with the matter, questions about the underlying issues that led to such an incident remain unanswered.

The Shurugwi court’s handling of the case reflects a balance between upholding the law and acknowledging the nuances of individual circumstances, leaving many to wonder if this incident is an isolated case or indicative of broader societal challenges.
