GWERU – In a strong stand for child protection, the Gweru Regional Court has sentenced 21-year-old Dubcheck Mudzingwa to 15 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a 13-year-old Grade 7 student.

This noteworthy ruling, delivered by Regional Magistrate Sibongile Marondedze, emphasizes the legal system's commitment to fighting sexual violence against minors.

Mudzingwa was convicted under Section 66(1)(a)(ii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23] for crimes characterized by premeditation and severe trauma to the victim.

Prosecutor Sibangani Dube detailed that the offense occurred in Mkoba 13, Gweru, in September 2025. Mudzingwa initially engaged the victim in a seemingly innocuous interaction at a local tuck shop, persuading her to exchange phone numbers. This innocent encounter quickly turned into a predatory grooming process, with Mudzingwa bombarding the minor with inappropriate messages before inviting her to his home, where the assault and sodomy took place without her consent.

“The act was emotionally and psychologically traumatic for the complainant. The significant age difference and the breach of trust are critical aggravating factors in this case,” Prosecutor Dube emphasized, highlighting the grave violation of the child's innocence.

Despite Mudzingwa's guilty plea and his status as a first-time offender—factors that often lead to leniency—Magistrate Marondedze affirmed that the seriousness of the crime warranted a harsh sentence. “This was a premeditated and serious violation of a young child, who, at law, cannot consent to such acts,” she declared. While the presumptive sentence for such offenses is 20 years, the court deemed a 15-year term appropriate, reflecting both the severity of the crime and the necessity for a strong deterrent.
