GWERU — A 58-year-old grandfather from Walshblock, Shurugwi, briefly appeared before Gweru Magistrate P. Mafusire for remand, facing three counts of raping his 14-year-old granddaughter.

Jealous Chindungu was remanded in custody to August 18, 2025, and is expected to appear at the Gweru Regional Court, which has jurisdiction to preside over the matter.

According to court papers, the alleged incidents occurred on three separate occasions: February, May, and an unspecified date. The state alleges that Chindungu used coercion and threats, including a knife, to intimidate the minor into silence.

The court heard that on one occasion, Chindungu allegedly pushed the complainant to the ground, removed her pants, and had sexual intercourse without her consent.

On another occasion, he allegedly ordered the minor to accompany him to a bushy area, where he repeated the alleged offense.

Chindungu was not asked to plead during the brief court appearance.

The matter was been referred to the Gweru Regional Court for further proceedings.
