HARARE, Zimbabwe –Alpha Media Holdings (AMH), one of Zimbabwe's leading independent media houses, has reportedly been charged with undermining the authority of or insulting the President, stemming from a recent Muckraker column published in its weekly newspaper, the Zimbabwe Independent.
According to a NewsDay report on Thursday, July 10, 2025, detectives from Harare Central Police Station’s Law and Order Section recorded a statement from Kholwani Nyathi, AMH's editor-in-chief, regarding the charges.
Chris Mhike, a lawyer representing AMH who accompanied Nyathi to the police station, confirmed the development. "The initial court appearance of the company’s representative in these fresh legal proceedings has been scheduled for the morning of Thursday, July 10, 2025, or soon thereafter," Mhike stated.
He added, "The Company denies all allegations levelled against it by the State and details of the denial shall be traversed at the forthcoming court session.”
This latest legal challenge for AMH comes barely a week after Faith Zaba, editor of the Zimbabwe Independent, was granted bail on July 4, 2025. Zaba had spent three nights in custody facing similar charges of allegedly undermining the authority of or insulting the President. Her charge also related to a satirical article published in the newspaper’s Muckraker column.
