St Albans, United Kingdom - What was supposed to be a celebration of Zimbabwean culture at ZimFest UK 2025 turned into a social media storm, as images of indecent dressing and reports of public indecency overshadowed the music and festivities.

Viral images of young women in skimpy outfits, coupled with allegations of attendees urinating and defecating in public spaces despite ample toilet facilities, leading to widespread condemnation.

The scenes, described by many as “a public disgrace”, have spurred a heated debate over the moral and cultural fabric of Zimbabweans living in the diaspora.

In the wake of the scandal, British authorities handed the ZimFest UK organising team a £3,000 fine following shocking post‑festival scenes.

A local online Zimbabwean publication claimed at least 15 piles of human faeces were found around the venue and nearby roads, alongside used condoms and overflowing bins.

Council staff and local residents are said to have expressed astonishment at the lack of sanitation, condemning it as “an absolute embarrassment for the community.”

The organisers acknowledged the lapse, attributing blame to a small number of attendees and pledged to enhance future sanitation protocols .

Hopewell Chin’ono, a prominent journalist and social media activist, weighed in on the incident.

“The organisers of Zimfest provided more than 100 toilets, let that sink in! The issue here is mindset.

"Zimbabweans need to change their mindset, the same one that makes people throw litter from car windows, walk over raw sewage, urinate on buildings, and now this?

“If the organiser of an event provides over 100 toilets and there are no queues, why would anyone in their right mind do what is being reported? It is mindset. And it is the same toxic mindset that has held back our country," he said.

Chin’ono lauded the efforts of the organisers saying they did their part.

He said no organiser can control human decency, the shame lies not in the organisers' efforts, but in the mindset of those who turned a celebration into a public disgrace.

Adding to the chorus of criticism, popular Twitter user Ali-naka did not mince words.

“After trashing Zimbabwe, they have exported the mediocrity abroad. It will take societal reforms to change Zimbabwe.

"The problem is beyond politics now. Zanu PF generation is a group of Dunderheads who can’t tell the difference between normal and abnormal,” Naka said.

On Facebook, reactions ranged from outrage to ridicule.

Commenters described the attendees as “Zvima h*re zve mu UK” (UK-based prostitutes) and lambasted their choice of attire with comments like “Kuita kunge mombe ku ZimFest” (behaving like cattle at ZimFest).

Despite the controversies, ZimFest UK 2025 was, by design, a platform to showcase Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage.

Featuring performances from Winky D, Oriyano, Nisha Ts and DJ Maphorisa, among others, the festival attracted thousands of Zimbabweans from across the UK.

Traditional food stalls, cultural exhibitions, and family-oriented spaces painted an otherwise vibrant picture.

Organisers had invested heavily in infrastructure to ensure a clean and well-managed environment.
