Harare - Zimbabwean courts have imposed lengthy prison terms in three unrelated rape cases, including the conviction of a Village Head and two young men, as prosecutors vowe zero tolerance for sexual violence against women and children.

In Bindura, an 18-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for raping a 11-year-old Grade 2 pupil in Shamva district.

“On the 31st of July 2025, in a village in Shamva, the offender approached the victim… who was left home with her younger siblings while her parents were away,” the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said in a statement.

The man physically assaulted the child in the kitchen before raping her, gagged and threatened her with violence if she ever revealed the incident to anyone.

The victim only disclosed the assault to a relative on 5 August, triggering a police report and the perpetrator’s arrest.

In a separate Bindura case, the same regional court sentenced a local man to an effective 42 years in prison for armed robbery and the serial rape of a woman over several hours.

The attacks took place on 22 August 2025 inside a tuckshop in Batanai Compound where the victim was sleeping.

After breaking in at 0100 hours and stealing US$244 and a cellphone at knifepoint, the offender repeatedly raped the woman until 0430 hours.

“The offender demonstrated calculated brutality and a profound disregard for human life and dignity,” the NPA said.

“The effective 42-year sentence is a testament to the fact that those who prey on the vulnerable will face justice to the fullest extent of the law," the authority added.

The suspect was arrested eight days later on an unrelated public violence charge, during which police recovered the stolen phone from his pocket.

The victim unlocked it in court using her security pattern, sealing the identification.

Meanwhile, in Zvishavane, a 40-year-old Village Head was jailed for 17 years for raping a 23-year-old woman from his village after luring her to his homestead under false pretences.

“On the 18th of September 2025 at around 1400 hours, the offender approached the victim’s homestead and informed her father that the sorghum used for the rain-making ritual had dried and required crushing,” the NPA reports.

The father instructed his daughter to accompany the Village Head.

Finding the homestead empty, the man forced the woman into a round hut, overpowered her and raped her.

The victim initially remained silent but behavioural changes noticed by her father led to the matter being reported days later leading to the perpetrator's arrest.
