Shurugwi — Two men have died after a mine shaft they were working in collapsed at Best Trade Integrity Mine in Shurugwi in the early hours of Wednesday, September 30, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred at about 1:30am, trapping the two men inside a shaft reportedly about seven metres deep.
Midlands police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, identified the deceased as Clever Chidumo (30) and Alex Moyo (23) both from Madzimamoto Village under Chief Banga in Shurugwi.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the sudden deaths of two people following the collapse of a mine shaft they were working in at Best Trade Integrity mine in Shurugwi,” Inspector Mahoko said.
He said the two men were allegedly panning for gold when the shaft collapsed.
Police were alerted and responded to the scene, where the bodies were later retrieved with the assistance of community members.
Inspector Mahoko urged people involved in underground mining to prioritise safety.
“We call upon members of the public to always consider safety when conducting any form of underground mining,” he said.
The deaths add to concerns over the dangers faced by artisanal and small-scale miners working in underground shafts, particularly where safety measures and structural assessments may be limited.
