Mberengwa, Zimbabwe - A heated domestic dispute turned deadly in Domboshava, Mberengwa, when a four-month-old baby girl fell from her mother’s back and died during a fight between her parents, police have confirmed.
The parents were later caught attempting a secret burial.
Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, detailed the heartbreaking incident that occurred at around 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a case of murder where a four-month-old baby died after she fell from her mother’s back during a fight between the parents,” Mahoko said.
The infant was identified as Mitchelle Zhou.
The tragedy unfolded when Mitchelle’s parents, Mthandazo Zhou (23) and Tawananyasha Zhou (18) both of Domboshava, Mberengwa, were fighting.
“The parents are alleged to have had a misunderstanding which generated into a fight. The mother was carrying Mitchelle on her back.
“During the scuffle, it is said the baby slipped from the mother’s back and fell down and died instantly," Inspector Mahoko said.
Police were alerted and attended the scene, only to discover a grim twist, and their subsequent arrest.
“Both parents, Mthandazo… and Tawananyasha… are in police custody assisting with investigations.
“At the time of arrest, they were processing a secret burial of the body at Khumalo Village under Chief Negove, Gomonhenga area in Mberengwa," Inspector Mahoko said.
Inspector Mahoko condemned domestic violence and urged restraint in times of disputes.
“We are calling upon members of the public to always maintain peace in their relationships and solve disputes amicably when they arise,” he said.
