Gweru, Zimbabwe — Midlands Provincial Education Director, Jameson Machimbira, has called on students and the broader community to take a united stand against drug and substance abuse, warning of its devastating impact on individuals and society.
Speaking during the Speech and Prize Giving Day at Chaplin High School on Wednesday, Machimbira expressed serious concern over the rising use of harmful substances among young people, including Mutoriro (crystal meth), Mbanje (marijuana), and alcohol.
He urged learners, parents, and educators to work together to combat the growing menace, stressing that anti-drug messages displayed on billboards around schools must not be ignored.
"Abusing drugs and substances is detrimental to you, your friends, your families, your communities, and the nation at large," he said. "Never get into drugs. If you have already started, stop and seek help."
He further encouraged members of the public to report drug peddlers to the police and hinted at new initiatives set to be introduced in schools to strengthen the fight against substance abuse.
Machimbira who was the guest of Honour also took the opportunity to commend the school’s prize winners, applauding their hard work and dedication.
