Harare, Zimbabwe - The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have arrested a key suspect in the robbery and murder of Joseph "Mutangaz" Mutangadura, a 67-year-old businessman killed at his farmhouse, Mutangadura Hideout, along Dunstan Road in Ruwa, Harare, on August 17, 2025.

ZRP Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said members of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), after receiving a tipoff, tracked the suspect to Gweru, Mkoba.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Phillip Mutasa (38) in connection with the robbery and murder of Joseph Mutangadura (67) which occurred at Mutangadura Hideout along Dunstan Road, Ruwa, Harare on 17th August 2025," Nyathi said.

"On 3rd October 2025, detectives from CID Homicide, Harare received information which linked the suspect to the murder and robbery cases.

"The detectives tracked the suspect leading to his arrest in Mkoba Six, Gweru. The suspect implicated seven accomplices who are on the run," he said.

On that day, the attack happened around 11:00 PM where a police report said seven masked men with guns, crowbars and hammers stormed the Mutangadura property.

They tied up the security guard with shoelaces and broke into the house.

They forced Mutangadura’s son, Munyaradzi and the guard to lie on the floor in the dining room while they entered the bedroom where Joseph and his wife were sleeping.

Police say Mutangadura was shot in the stomach while sleeping in his bedroom with his wife.

His wife was attacked and taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital. Mutangadura was rushed to Eden Hospital in Windsor, Ruwa, but died on arrival.

He reportedly begged the robbers, offering to take them to his abattoirs for cash, but they killed him and fled with just a cheap cellphone.

This led to some suspicions that it was not just a robbery but a planned killing.

Mutangadura, was a reportedly well-loved businessman in his community and started Mutangadura Hideout in 2010, a popular spot in Ruwa for horse riding and events.

By 2018, he owned Mutangaz Panyama, a chain of butcheries and ran Lisheen Estate’s farm.

He was married, with kids helping in the family business and was known for supporting the community as well.
