GWERU — Three Midlands State University (MSU) students have been remanded in custody on allegations of attempting to overthrow the government or inciting public violence.
Milton Muchayana (21), Anenyasha Moyo (22) and Langton Muhoma (22) appeared before Gweru magistrate P. Mafusire over the weekend, facing charges under Section 22(2) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
Prosecutor Brandon Ndlovu told the court that on August 8, 2024, at MSU, the trio allegedly distributed flyers containing material aimed at inciting violence against the Government of Zimbabwe.
“The accused persons connived to originate the inscribed information they put on the flyers to incite public violence against the Government of Zimbabwe and distributed them to Midlands State University students,” Ndlovu said.
The court heard that the flyers were produced using an Itel P65 phone, an Honor X6A cellphone and an Epson printer.
According to the prosecution, the first accused admitted to the offence, while the other two denied the allegations.
One of the accused told the court:
“We are not seeking bail at this stage, but we request time to seek legal representation.”
The magistrate remanded the students in custody to August 27 for further investigations, after the prosecutor applied for the postponement.
