Zvishavane - A 34-year-old man has been arrested in Zvishavane following a gruesome murder committed during a dispute over a fire place behind LaLiga Bar in the early hours of July 5, 2025.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the arrest of Jemitias Manduna of Manduna Village under Chief Tshovani in Chiredzi, who allegedly assaulted 48-year-old Taruvinga Dhema of Pius Village under Chief Masunda in Zvishavane.
The altercation occurred at approximately 5:00 am, Saturday.
The two men, both believed to be mentally challenged and homeless, were known to frequent the Mandava suburb of Zvishavane.
A log and a stone were used in the murder.
“It is alleged that the two had an altercation over a fire place. The suspect, Jemitias Manduna, picked up a log and a stone, which he used to assault the now deceased on the head and face until he became unconscious,” said Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the Midlands Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer.
Police officers were called to the scene and arrested Manduna on site.
Dhema was rushed to Zvishavane District Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Police have since expressed concern over the lack of proper care for mentally challenged individuals in communities.
“We appeal to people with mentally challenged relatives to seek medication or have them admitted at mental health institutions,” Inspector Mahoko said.
