Conservative US commentator Candace Owens has declared she is “lfully prepared to take on this battle on behalf of the entire world after French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, launched a defamation lawsuit against her in a US court.

News outlet, Reuters, reports that in a video published to her 4.5 million YouTube subscribers on Wednesday, Owens directly addressed the French first lady reiterating that she was a man and vowing to face Brigitte Macron in court.

The Macrons earlier filed a 219-page complaint in Delaware, alleging Owens had engaged in a prolonged campaign of falsehoods for personal gain, with 22 counts of defamation.

The lawsuit, which includes 99 pages of factual evidence, features Brigitte Macron’s childhood photographs, birth certificates, and documentation of her three children from her first marriage.

The filing accuses Owens of using the couple’s private life to promote her independent platform, gain notoriety and make money, describing her behaviour as “relentless bullying on a worldwide scale.”

Macron’s lead counsel, Tom Clare, told CNN that suing Owens was the last resort, claiming the commentator had ignored multiple requests to cease her attacks.

“This lawsuit is not about silencing criticism, it’s about ending a campaign of malicious fabrications,” Clare said.

Owens has repeatedly targeted Mrs Macron in her content, amplifying a baseless rumour that the French first lady is transgender.

In 2024, she published a video titled “Is France’s First Lady a Man?”

Earlier this year, she followed up with a YouTube exposé called “Becoming Brigitte.”

The origins of the rumour trace back to 2021, when French bloggers Amandine Roy and Natacha Rey posted a four-hour video alleging Brigitte Macron was born male.

Though Mrs Macron successfully sued the pair in 2022, the Paris Appeals Court overturned their fines in July this year, ruling that the bloggers had acted in “good faith” and their allegations were an expression of belief, not malice.

The Macrons’ legal team however argues that Owens’ conduct is different.

“This is not a good-faith expression of opinion. This is a coordinated effort to turn lies into profit,” the lawsuit contends.

Owens, for her part, has framed the lawsuit as an attack on free speech.

“They want to intimidate people into silence. “But I won’t be bullied. I’ll see you in court,” she said.
